A new carpet in the home brings along with it all of the warmth, comfort, and a cosy place to rest your feet at the end of a long day. Unfortunately, carpets are notoriously demanding in terms of maintenance, since deep down in the piling debris, crumbs, and bacteria can fester and grow if left unattended.

Below are five of the most common mistakes that end up ruining new carpets:

  • Scrubbing for Stain Removal

One mistake most of us have probably made on more than one occasion is to scrub extra hard on stains, because after all, elbow grease, some soap, and time will eventually get those stains out, right? Even if hard scrubbing can remove stains, it isn’t recommended.

The reason is that carpets, whilst somewhat durable, are not meant to undergo hard scrubbing as the fibres can weaken quicker and age your carpet in no time. BLOT out those stains, don’t SCRUB them!

  • Using a Rental Carpet Cleaning Machine

This point may seem a little strange because isn’t the whole point of renting out a steam cleaner to save money AND restore your carpet back to just-like-new status? Perhaps, but there is a big problem that plagues many of these rental machines you may have seen at the supermarket.

Quite often, these machines pale in comparison to what professional cleaners use in terms of quality. Moreover, they simply cannot be cleaned as thoroughly as those used by professionals and change hands quite often, which means they’ll have accumulated a lot of dirt and bacteria from other owners’ homes and spread to yours as well.

  • Using the WRONG Products

Not all cleaning products are the same, particularly if we’re talking about commercially sold chemical cleaning products. Many are harsh and may end up doing more harm than good, and unfortunately, there’s no “one size fits all” product for every type of carpet.

Many homeowners end up damaging their carpet with harsh chemical products that may leave residual deep in the carpet, thus potentially causing a breathing hazard. If white vinegar and baking soda won’t do the trick, take your time to evaluate your choices and call in a professional if in doubt.

  • Not Vacuuming Often Enough

There’s a commonly-touted urban myth propagating whereby new carpets should not be vacuumed too much to preserve them. This sounds like an easy way to get off the hook by doing a chore around the house. In reality, vacuuming your carpet shouldn’t cause any damage at all and is absolutely necessary at least once per week to stave off any buildups up soil, food crumbs, pet dander, and whatever else is lurking in that new carpet.

  • Failing to Clean up Spills Fast Enough

This one comes down to circumstance, but it needs to be said. Cleaning spills right away is essential. Doesn’t matter if it’s Coca-Cola or a glass of red wine, it’s best to blot out that stain right away, without delay.

Remember in point one that scrubbing hard will cause more damage and instead gently blot the stain over and over until it’s reduced or eliminated entirely. When’s the best time to do this? Right away!
